TYPICAL GAMEPLAY IN TASK FORCES AT WAR

One player uses the Allied fleet and the other uses the Axis fleet. A player holds no more than five ship cards at any one time. Three of these are played face down as a "task force" and revealed simultaneously before comparing.

Italian Carrier Aquila

Count the total numbers printed with the appropriate symbols on all the cards of the opposing task forces and compare the numbers printed with these symbols on each side. For example, if the action is a carrier battle (there are a total of four or more aircraft carrier type cards in the opposing task forces) and the aircraft symbols on a side’s three played ship cards contain the numbers "2", "2" and "1", the cards contain a total of "5" aircraft symbols for the carrier battle.

If both sides have equal numbers of the appropriate symbols, the combat ends with no losses.

Otherwise, one of the opposing task forces will lose one "sunken" ship card. If one side has more symbols than the other side but no multiples, the player with fewer symbols may choose one of his or her face-up cards and turn it over to the opposing player. That ship card is "sunk". If the side with more symbols has twice as many or more of the appropriate symbols, the player with more symbols may choose one of the face-up cards from the opposing task force. This ship card is the one that is "sunk".

The winning player places the sunken ship card face down in a "victory pile" in an out-of-the way location to count at the end of the round.

Both sides then discard all of their remaining face up task force, placing them in face-up discard piles. Both sides draw three more cards from their decks, select another three card task force from their hands and resolve another battle. This continues until one side draws the last card in their side’s deck, which immediately ends the round.

The first player to win two rounds wins the game.
