Chapter II: The German Attack

Below is a picture of the play area after discards and deployment. Click on the cards to "zoom in."

The Axis player has first move. He reveals the top card of his play deck to find out how many orders he will have this turn. He gets two. Using the first, he activates I/227th Jäger Battalion and advances to Minusinsk. Because the 227th Jäger Regimental HQ and the III/83rd Artillery Battalion are stacked with the moving formation, they are allowed to move with it. The Soviet player has left this location undefended, so the Axis captures it without a fight.

With his next order, the Axis player plays "Ordered Forward" card from his hand. "Ordered Forward" is an an action card that gives him 1 Orders Check. He reveals the top card of his play deck again and gets two more orders. He uses one of them to attach a Sapper Company to the II/227th Jäger Battalion and the other to active the battalion.

Ordered Forward

II/227th moves forward into South Central Stalingrad and then attempts to Infiltrate the Soviet position. The Chance Check number on the top card of the Play Deck is a 3 so the Infiltration is successful. The Axis player decides to resolve combat at the location. Both players reveal a Chance Check to see who shoots first. The Axis player gets a 4. He adds 2 for his Sapper Company and 1 from the cover modifier of the Infiltrate attack position on the South Central Stalingrad card. The Soviet player gets a 3 and adds 3 for the cover modifier of the Defend position. With a total of 7, the Axis player gets to shoot first. He turns over his top card and looks at the Combat Check number for Direct Fire at a Soft Target (the number in the green circle). It’s an 8! He adds the Combat Value of II/227th Jäger Battalion (5) and that of the Sapper Company (1) for a total of 14. The Soviet player has a total defense value of 8 (Base value of 5 on the defending II/385th Rifle Battalion plus 3 for the cover modifier of the location). The total attack exceeds his defense, but doesn’t double it, so he draws only one card for a combat result. The Results line reads: "1 Hit, Hold on Chance 4, 7." He put the card under II/385th Rifle Battalion to mark the Hit and then makes a Chance Check to see if the Formation holds its ground. He draws a 3, so II/385th is withdrawn.

Sapper Company

That’s not the end of the bad news for the Soviet player. The Sapper Company has a chance to make a Shock attack if the Axis player gets a Chance check of 5. The Axis player turns over a card and it IS a 5. Shock attacks, like artillery attacks are one sided affairs. The Axis player draws a Combat Check for a Shock attack and gets a 9. Adding that to the Shock value of 3 on the Sapper Company scores a 12. The defending 385th Rifle Regimental HQ has a total defense of 7. The Soviet player draws a result of: "Hold on Chance 2, 4, 6," but then draws a Chance Check of 5. The HQ is withdrawn and the Axis have captured the location leaving a gaping hole in the center of the Soviet defense. Things look bleak for the Soviets, but it’s not over until it’s over.
