Battlelines® Example Game
Chapter I: Getting Started
For this example game, we’ll be using the 100th Light Division (Axis) and 112th Rifle Division (Soviet). They’ll be fighting in the streets of Stalingrad.
The first step is to sort the cards from the Streets of Stalingrad Operation deck into 4 piles: Axis Reinforcements, Soviet Reinforcements, Locations, and Missions. Then a Mission card is randomly selected:
This one is the assault on the Red October factory. The blue boxes are Axis positions, the red and green ones are Soviet. The Soviets can put artillery in the green positions on the east bank of the Volga. The other positions represent the frontlines, objective, and the Axis base of operations.
The red, blue, and black lines on the Mission card show how the locations are "connected." Black lines running off the edge of the card are used in multiplayer games.
The Axis player starts with the Barricades Settlement location, and three randomly chosen frontline positions. The Soviet player starts with the Red October Factory and four random locations.
In this Mission, each player gets to choose 6 Formation cards for the initial deployment. The enemy will randomly discard one of those. In addition, the Soviet player gets an extra artillery Formation to deploy on the east bank.
The Axis player chooses to start with 2 artillery battalions, a Bicycle recon battalion, and 2 battalions of the 227th Jäger Battalion with the Regimental HQ.
The Soviet player chooses the Divisional HQ, and all 5 cards of the 385th Regiment: the HQ, 3 rifle battalions, and the mortar battalion.
In addition, the Soviet player gets to deploy an artillery Formation on the east bank of the Volga.
Each player randomly selects an enemy card to discard, draws his initial had from his play deck, and deploys his starting formations face down in one of his initial locations. When both players are ready, turn the face down cards up and begin play.
