History

Winter Storm

The relief of Stalingrad by 4th Panzer Army was under the command of Field Marshall von Manstein. The plan was simple and desperate. The 4th Panzer Army would attack along the Rostov to Stalingrad railroad and relieve the besieged 6th Army. The supply situation was so difficult that the German panzers carried fuel and ammunition on the decks of the tanks.

Two phase lines were in the plan the first was the attack across the Chir by the 48th Panzer Corps to join 4th Panzer Army as it approached Kalatch. This attack never materialized since the 48th Panzer Corps was engaged in a swirling battle with the Soviet 4th Tank Army and 1st Guards Army along the Chir River. Zhukov had timed the attacks of little Saturn perfectly. The Second Phase line was the breakout attack by 6th Army when 4th Panzer Army approached Stalingrad. Field Marshal von Paulus never launched the breakout and thus doomed his army to destruction.

1st Guards Mechanized Corps

The 1st Guards Mechanized Corps was built from the remnants of the 1st Guards Rifle Division. Assigned to the 3rd Guards Army, Southwestern Front, in November 1942, the corps was first committed to action during Operation Saturn. Teamed with two tank corps, the 1st helped maul the Rumanian 3rd Army, destroy the Italian 8th Army and then drive for the Stalingrad airfields. During the attempted German relief of Stalingrad, operation "Winter Storm " left the 1st Guards Mechanized Corps in sore need of a refit.

After a period of rebuilding, the corps was engaged in the Battle of Kursk and spent the remainder of 1943 supporting offensive operations in the Ukraine. Following a year in reserve during 1944, the corps returned to action in January 1945. After participating in the conquest of Hungary and Austria, the corps ended the war in Vienna.

11th Panzer Division Unit Deck

The 11th Panzer Division was raised in the summer of 1940 as part of the "armored forces" expansion in preparation for the invasion of the Soviet Union. Its first combat came during the capture of Belgrade, Yugoslavia the following year. Later it advanced through the Ukraine and then participated in the attempt to take Moscow during the winter of 1941.

In 1942, the 11th Panzer Division fought a series of delaying actions along the Chir river as part of operation "Winter Storm ", the failed attack to relieve Stalingrad. These actions by the famed 48th Panzer Korps - "The Fire Brigade" - ranged all along the Chir river bend and held against a brilliantly timed counter offensive by Marshall Zhukov.

After refitting the 11th Panzer Division was committed to the battle of Kursk, where the division continued in heavy combat throughout most of 1943. Late that year, the battered 11th Panzer Division was transferred to France and rebuilt. After fighting delaying actions in the Rhone Valley, the division continued defending southern Germany, finally surrendering to the Americans in May 1945.

1st Guards Mechanized Corps Unit Deck

The 1st Guards Mechanized Corps is the largest group of formations that are deployed in Battlelines. The combat power is concentrated in direct fire against soft targets, with the second most effective attack being a direct fire versus armor. The 1st Guards Mechanized Corps deadly when attacking but is very brittle when attacked. This is because the unit deck is modeled on the 1942 organization for the Battlelines® Stalingrad campaign. The 1st Guards Mechanized Corps unit deck is optimized for offensive attrition.
