History

Drive on Stalingrad

Lacking the strength to advance along the entire front in 1942, the Nazis launched "Operation Blue" along the Southern portion of the vast Russian Front. To man the long frontlines and furnish the numbers for the 1942 offensive, over 30 Romanian, Hungarian, and Italian divisions were included in the Axis forces massed in the South.

Army Group B met the summer offensive aimed at Kharkov consuming the strength of Southwest Front in a series of mobile defenses and counter attacks. Sixth Army and 4th Panzer Army cleared the Don Bend west of the Chir river and jumped off toward Stalingrad making rapid progress through the weakened Soviet forces. However, every mile gained lengthened the Axis lines, especially as the attacking forces split, with one spearhead aimed at the city of Stalingrad along the Volga and the other swinging far to the south to occupy the oil-producing centers in the Caucasus region.

The advance in the Caucasus was finally halted by rough terrain, determined Soviet defenders, and the logistical nightmare of trying to supply the Axis invaders. To the north, the advance on Stalingrad went well, with Axis forces winning battle after battle. They advanced over miles of nearly empty steppes until, by August, they reached the outskirts of Stalingrad.

This set lets you recreate this historic operation using the 9th Panzer Division and 18th Tank Corps.

9th Panzer Division

Formed in 1939 from the 4th Light Division, 9th Panzer Division was part of Army Group South at the beginning of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. It swept through the Ukraine in 1941 and helped encircle large numbers of Red Army troops at Kiev. In 1942, after facing the Soviet winter and spring offensives in its sector, the 9th Panzer Division took part in "Drive on Stalingrad". After clearing the Don River bend the 9th Panzer Division was committed to city fighting in the "Streets of Stalingrad", a task that the elite panzer division was not well suited to do. Fortunately for the men of the division, they were withdrawn for refit before the Soviet counter-offensive "Operation Uranus" began.

18th Tank Corps

The 18th Tank Corps was part of the 62nd Army, Southwest Front assigned to stop the German forces in their "Drive on Stalingrad". The corps made its stand at the Chir River in the Don River bend during the summer of 1942. Several duels with 24th Panzer Korps attrited the 18th Tank Corps strength. However the continuous combat hardened the survivors as they were schooled in the harsh lessons of war. By December the 18th Tank Corps was refitted and participated in "Operation Uranus" to close the trap at Stalingrad. In 1943 the corps was reorganized and participated in actions at Kursk, continuing in service throughout the remainder of World War II.

9th Panzer Division Unit Deck

The 9th Panzer Division is an elite German panzer division. This division has a high operational tempo and an excellent tactical diversity. The chief and only weakness of 9th Panzer is that its formations have very high victory point values. This was done because the 9th Panzer represents a significant portion of the German army mobile and armored combat power. Suffering losses could cause you to lose the Operation even if you win the Mission. If you like to play a deck that has every solution, this is the one for you.

18th Tank Corps Unit Deck

The 18th Tank Corps deck is a trained Russian tank corps circa 1942 and is at about 70% strength. The corps is equipped with KV-1, T-34 and BT-7 tanks. The formations of the 18th Tank Corps have a very high operational tempo but have rather irregular combat power. They can achieve local tactical superiority even over the elite Panzer divisions. The 18th Tank Corps is however brittle and will lose formations in the face of the enemy. This is expected of it though, and as such, the losses suffered contribute little to the enemy victory. It can be stubborn on defense and attack effectively when an opportunity presents itself.
